“LITTLE BROWN JUG”

STERLING SILVER CHARMS & EARRINGS
Recently the local Historical Society in Union County,
Illinois asked us to create a charm to sell in their gift shop.
It was to be a sterling silver version of the “Little Brown Jug”
made by the famous Kirkpatrick Brothers. In 1859 the brothers
built and operated a pottery making establishment here in our
hometown of Anna. For the following 30 years or so they cornered
the market regionally, making both functional wares and
fanciful creations in clay. Today, their hard to find ceramics
are considered fine American collectibles. Not only did they make
everyday crocks, jugs, pipes and dishware objects,
but also such humorous items as “pig flasks”, “snake jugs”,
and “frog cups”! These pioneer entrepreneurs had flair
and a sense of humor. To promote their wares at state fairs,
they gave away miniature versions of their real crock jugs.
These mini jugs were sometimes worn on lapels…a symbol of temperance
and avoiding the evils of strong drink. Ironically, they also supplied
many a tavern with stoneware jugs for their products!
Our “Little Brown Jug” charm is a re-creation of the
Kirkpatrick Brother’s miniature jugs and are solid sterling silver….
Made by method of lost wax casting . Charms can be attached
to a charm bracelet or worn on a chain (chain not included).
Earrings have sterling silver French hook ear wires.
